ϟ Kayden and Aldrich: Sometimes "Goodbye" is a Second Chance [reserved for Ayra]
It was perhaps long overdue, but Kayden was finally about to branch out from everything he knew: the sea, his family, his region, his world. Most started their careers as trainers in their early teens, but not Kayden. He started working with his father in his early teens and it indeed proved to be more valuable than jumping headfirst into something he wasn't ready for. At least, it seemed that way so far.
The plan was in action. As his friend Aldrich said goodbye to his parents and everything he considered routine -- his books, his home, his safety -- Kayden helped his father ready their boat for travel. Konika wouldn't be a long trip, but it was already noon and although the tide was in their favour, it'd still be an hour or two before they landed.
At last, Aldrich appeared at the dock, and they set out for their destination: Professor Aspen's Laboratory. Of course, Aldrich knew a thing or two about the Lab and what it offered, specifically the starter he looked to obtain, whereas Kayden was clueless. He would make up his mind when he got there and saw the options -- afterall, he hardly knew anything about Lanorae or its Pokemon. He just knew the region threw a great festival in the summer.
Finally, land was in sight again (Aldrich seemed relieved as the modernized boat wasn't something he was particularly used to) and Kayden began to say his goodbyes to his parents. It wasn't particularly emotional, as he knew they would continually keep in touch and force him to do the same. One day he would be back to take over the company, but that was a long while away.
Konika was not a long while away. It was literally a dock's length away, as the two young men stepped off the boat and watched it head off back toward Cianwood. Kayden wasn't one for long, drawn-out goodbyes or sentimental moments, and quickly turned and made his way down the dock, his sandals making an all-too-familiar noise against the wooden pier, then the sand, and finally the grass.
The Lab wasn't hard to find at all, seeing as it was the main attraction of the small coastal town, and stood out quite clearly. "Would you like to do the honours?" he asked, before allowing Aldrich to knock at the door. 'This should be good!' he thought to himself, eager and excited to get going with a new companion and an old friend as well.

ooc. Just as a note, Jake ran all the powerplaying of Aldy past me, so yeah =3
bic.
[ & ] It was really quite a feat that Aldrich was capable of wearing the relatively heavy clothing he currently did, considering the average heat of Konika Village during the summer [not to mention the odd looks his attire generally received considering he looked like he didn't even belong in this era]. On the plus side though, at least the man had enough sense to let the green traveling cloak simply drape over his shoulder rather than put it on completely. That may have been a bit much even for someone who seemed to be, more or less, used to such a thing.
[ & ] "Well, if you insist," Aldrich grinned, evidently quite cheerful now that his feet were safely back on solid ground and the few books he happened to have insisted on bringing along with him in his shoulder pack no longer had any risk of being ruined by ocean water. What a crime that would be!
[ & ] He extended his hand and knocked quickly, only to hurriedly have to shift his position to prevent his cloak from falling off his shoulder. It was evident that he would most likely have to make a few adjustments to how he was carrying everything, otherwise he was going to have a lot of difficulty during travel. But, on the other hand, at least he was prepared, right? At least, in Aldrich's mind he was, which meant that "prepared" consisted of books, quills, and whatever else any self-made scholar needed.
[ & ] "Have you decided which starter it is you wish for?" his good-natured smile was directed at his present companion, the evidently formal air still permeating even into his casual speech. Aldrich had chosen his starter almost as soon as it was decided they would visit the lab -- though considering his habits and hobbies, Seaward was probably the obvious choice -- yet he had rather failed to ask Kayden about it. What better time was there than while waiting at the door to the lab?

He thought to himself a moment, before shrugging. "I dunno. I'll probably pick --" The door opened and a rather lively man interrupted him.
"Well hello there!" The fiery-red haired man grinned. "The name's Cillian, I'm an Aide here. C'mon in.
" Kayden obliged, Aldrich following behind. "Nice to meet you." Kayden said, glancing around the room casually. " I'm Kayden and this is my friend Aldrich." His companion gave a courteous nod. Suddenly, though, Kayden was mildly ashamed. ' I'm nineteen and only starting now? This guy's gonna think we're a joke. Most start when they're like eleven.' He gave a nervous grin. " And uh, we're here f--" "Morwen!" The aide shouted, disregarding Kayden's words. A Vespiquen soon emerged from a back room. " Be a doll and grab me some starter kits, will ya?" The aide turned back to the guests. " You were saying?" "H-How'd you know?" Kayden asked blankly. Was it that obvious they were new to this? " Well, ain't no experienced trainer look like that!" Cillian bared his pearly whites, pointing to Aldrich and his extravagant outfit, then all the things he was carrying. Kayden winced slightly. ' Please just act normal and let's get this over with. Please Aldy. Please please please.' But he knew that wouldn't be the case. [/blockquote]

[ & ] Aldrich was in mild awe as he allowed his gaze to drift around the lab. He wasn't exactly used to everything being so, well, modern. The computer that was humming quietly on the nearby table seemed to be particularly fascinating to him. Really, he wasn't completely oblivious to the technological world, but he had never really used a computer before. Books and tomes had always been his research method of choice. There just seemed to be something so... comfortingly solid about flipping through a book.
[ & ] Even so, the man couldn't help but raise a thin eyebrow as he turned his gaze only to be met by the aide's pointing finger. "I hardly think there's anything wrong with my dress," he stated simply, looking down at his intricate -- and extremely out of place -- clothing. This was his normal attire, there wasn't anything wrong with it... was there? No, certainly not! "It's quite proper for a gentleman in my family to dress like this. But... ah, how exactly do we go about this starter thing. I wouldn't mind to be partners with a Seaward, personally, though is there any sort of test we have to go about?"
[ & ] As usual, Aldrich didn't seem to be aware whatsoever that he was probably getting some odd looks and was potentially causing his companion to mentally slap himself in the head. Not act strange? Ha, Aldrich's strangeness was his -- and the rest of his family's -- normality after all!

Cillian smiled. "Nope, no test. We're pretty easy going. "
Kayden held his tongue. 'Let's just get this over with as painlessly as possible.' His hands found their way to his pockets, nervously. "And uhh, well. Surprise me. I don't really know what you've got or what's what, so anything is fine by me." Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right? Might as well take a chance and hope to get something that would be a good fit.
The aide smiled. "Sure thing." As he walked to the shelving unit behind his desk, Morwen (the Vespiquen, not the Professor), handed each of the boys a starter kit.[/blockquote] Congratulations! Kayden and Aldrich receive a Starter Kit!This kit contains five pokéballs, five potions, three full heals, one region map, and 1000 C. Cillian soon returned with a Pokeball in one hand and an Egg in the other. "Well here we are. One Seaward and one egg that will hatch into ... Well, something. Aldrich received a Seaward!Name: -Your Choice- Gender: -Your Choice- Level: 5 Attacks: Constrict, Leer Ability: Torrent Nature: -Your Choice- Experience: 0% Happiness Status: 0 (Neutral) Held Item: None Kayden received a Mystery Egg!It's shaking... ! [ & ] Aldrich smiled happily as he took the pokeball. He had slipped the items into his bag without a second glance, but he seemed to be absolutely entranced by the red and white sphere as he looked it over, obviously debating if it was a good idea to release his new sea serpent here or wait until he got outside to fully meet his new partner. However, the arrival of Kayden's egg drew his attention for a brief moment, and he watched out of the corner of his eye as the shape began to rock back and forth in Kayden's arms, almost lazily before a white-tipped foot managed to break the shell.
"Slowwwww," a yawn came as the hole grew wider, breaking apart to reveal the head of the pink and white creature, a dopey expression on its face as it looked up at its new master. It tilted its head slightly, two of its legs broken from its shell casing, but it didn't seem like it was about to break free anymore. No, it could breathe now, this was fine.
The egg hatched into a Slowpoke!Name: -Your choice- Gender: -Your choice- Level: o5. Attacks: Curse, Yawn, Tackle Ability: Oblivious Nature: -Your choice- Experience: 0% Happiness Status: 0 Neutral
[ & ] Aldrich grinned again. "Well! Could have been a lot worse, that. I personally wouldn't oppose to a Slowpoke of all things, they can get to be quite intelligent after all. Slowking rivals Alakazam I believe," he commented, running his thumbs absently over the surface of the Pokleball he still held. He looked at Cillian. "Thanks for your time, sir. We appreciate it."

Kayden looked the small pink, uhh, Pokemon in his hands, and nodded slowly. "Slowpoke. Uhh..." In his head, he wasn't so sure. 'This might be troublesome.' He looked it in its (admittedly glazed) eyes. "Neat." He looked at the rather amused expression on the aide's face, but decided to ignore it as Aldrich spoke. He shrugged. 'We'll see I guess.'
Following Aldrich's lead, Kayden thanked the aide and followed him out the door, down the steps, and onwards to the start of, well, something.
