&& name; ryan jonathan wolfe && nickname(s); ry, wolfie, wolf-man, wolverine && gender; male && age; twenty-four && date of birth; august fifth && occupation; level 1 criminal investigator, pokémon trainer && hometown; fall city, fiore
&& height; around 183 centimeters && weight; 74 kilograms && face-value; ryan has quite the manly face; strong jaw and a square-ish chin, supported by a strong neck that subtly flows over into his broad shoulders. his lips are a tad on the full side, set below a somewhat pointed nose and a pair of deep brown, almost hypnotizing eyes that appear somewhat lighter in the right light. his eyebrows are dark and somewhat thick; obviously manly, of course. his hair is pretty much of the same coloration, perhaps even a shade or so lighter. his hairstyle and the length seems to vary quite a bit: there are times where the male wears his hair long so that it covers his ears, his fringe at about the same height as his eyebrows, reaching the base of his neck in the back, and sometimes he opts for a shorter look and seems to be into experimenting in how he can make his hair look as if he rolled straight out of bed. though ryan likes a clean shave, there are days he just cannot be bothered with shaving, leaving a little stubble on his chin and cheeks.
&& rock your body; certainly a very imposing sight, ryan appears to literally live large; born to two very tall individuals, it would've been a miracle not to see this boy reach the six feet mark. he reaches just an inch or so above that, but slouches a bit, making him appear just a wee bit shorter than he actually is. the harsh training at the police academy ryan attended to sure did do his build some good. while appearing quite lean, the male carries a fair amount of weight with him, most, if not all of it composed out of muscle. It shows especially on his limbs, where the muscles are subtly outlined on his body. despite the slouching and not appearing extremely strong or muscular, this broad-shouldered young man is certainly not a pushover, nor will he take it very kindly would you get the brilliant idea of trying to push him over. seeing as being assigned to patrol most of the time, being a junior officer and all, means that ryan spent quite a lot of time outside, nicely tanning the man's skin. he doesn't burn easily, hence why he adores spending time outside: he doesn't have to worry about red, painful skin the next morning after running around in the sun for a while.
&& fashion sense; suffering from a mild case of obsessive compulsive disorder, ryan aims to look as presentable as possible; his wardrobe reflects this the most. not in the way said wardrobe is organized, but more in the way of what is in that wardrobe. ryan owns quite the collection of button-up shirts, preferring natural materials such as cotton over synthetic materials. these shirts come in quite a few colors, varying from light blue and white to lime green and pale pink, both short- and long-sleeved. during the warmer seasons, ryan prefers wearing t-shirts that are usually a bit tight-fitting over which he sometimes tends to wear a brown or white leather jacket. his pants are mostly jeans, actually, but kept as pristine as possible; there is not a single pair of jeans in ryan's closet that is ripped or has a hole in it or anything. not blessed with hips wide enough to hold up pants (he's actually quite a stick when it comes to that) ryan utilizes a wide array of belts to instead do that for him, the one most prominently used being a thick one made of brown leather with a simple, silver buckle. for shoes, ryan settles most of the time for a pair of simple, black running shoes, which are basically the only bit of his outfit he allows to get dirty every once in a while. not really the man to accessorize, ryan doesn't sport any save perhaps for a watch and a thin, silver bracelet with the initials of his parents engraved into it.
&& all together now; because of having ocd from a young age on, ryan has been teased for it and because of that grew up to be quite the shy young man. he generally doesn't fare well socially, clamping up in conversations with other people and growing bright red mostly around girls he finds attractive. during his childhood, he was suspected of having asperegers disease because he had the habit of distancing himself from others his age and was generally quite clumsy at being social, but this was later discovered to be partially the ocd's fault. The rest was just... well, clumsy-ness. because of his shyness, ryan is seen most of the time as a sweet, friendly kid who is always there for his friends, which he is. just not always.
ryan has a strong sense of what is right and what isn't, and can be very driven to achieve what he wants. in doing that, he can get a little blind for the feelings and emotions of other people, unintentionally hurting others. thus, he can appear blunt, cold and even a little cruel at times, when he actually doesn't even mean it. add to this the fact he finds it hard to express his own feelings to others, which includes apologizing to people, he doesn't have too many friends; they all think he's going to screw them over eventually. because of people more or less avoiding him, ryan hasn't really actively tried to make friends, making him again appear cold and distant. he seems to experience the exact same thing with pokémon, as he is not sure whether to treat them as his equals or treat them as pets; for that reason he finds it quite hard to open up to them, too. once ryan gets comfortable and starts opening up, however, he reveals himself as a young man who is always up for a laugh. he can even see the humor in his own clumsy ways, but even around friends he has a feeling of insecurity. slightly embarrassed about the fact he doesn't fare well on the socializing area and can even get quite jealous at people who do excel at that. jealousy is quite a big thing for ryan; it's something that stays with him like a chronic disease, as he is known to hold grudges for years.
still, as said earlier, ryan is incredibly driven. once he sets his mind to something, nothing can distract his attention from it and he will not rest until he's accomplished it; you can classify it as a 'get rich or die trying' mentality, except for the fact that ryan isn't trying to get rich. this does mean, however, in combination with the grudges he can hold for forever, he can sometimes decide to stop at nothing to get back at someone. it also means, on a more positive note, that when someone close to him gets hurt or threatened, ryan instantly gets very protective and caring of them. the downside of this is that he usually gets so obsessed that he ignores the possible risks that come with protecting someone: ryan will blindly put the wellbeing of others before that of his own. most of this can be blamed on his obsessive behavior; while he manages to control most of it nowadays, sometimes it still slips into his everyday rituals. think for example of constantly trying to get his hair right or even song lyrics and series of numbers just floating around his head. trying to make everything as nice as possible for everyone, he does draw a line at certain points and refuse to help anyone out when they're out of line, being quite stubborn at that, too.
though most of the time he tries to act a little responsible by taking the initiative and coming up with plans and tactics, it’s not all that hard to get ryan excited for something. he still maintains his rather calm persona, but once he gets hyped up for something, it takes him quite a while to let it go.
&& a long, long time ago, in a land far, far away… toni had everything a woman could wish for; a nice job, a loving husband and enough money to support the two of them and have a little extra cash on the side for nice holidays or a new dishwasher if their old one randomly decided to die on them. and still she was unhappy. toni came from a big family and dreamed of having at least four kids ever since she was still a young girl. she wanted to become a full time mother instead of being stuck behind a dusty desk from nine to five. but no matter how hard she and her husband jonathan tried, toni could not get pregnant. The couple's final hopes rested with an artificial insemination procedure, and still then toni getting pregnant was not guaranteed. but miraculously, it worked. even better than the doctors hoped; they confirmed not only that the procedure had worked, but that toni was pregnant with twins.
the happiness was relatively short lived. both babies weren't developing properly, and eventually one of them died and had to be removed. It was uncertain for a while if the other boy would survive, but on the fifth of august, nearly a week early, ryan jonathan wolfe was first introduced to the world. both of his parents doted upon him, but especially toni was incredibly protective of her little boy; after all, she wanted four kids, and ended up with only one. add to that that ryan was a frail child when he was younger, and... you do the math.
in school, ryan's mother forbid him to do sports or battle Pokémon; anything that could even be potentially dangerous to her little boy was completely banned from his life. because of the protective lifestyle that was forced upon him, ryan became a shy kid that never hung out with other people much; rather than making friends and spending time with them, he'd sit on his room and read books on science and complex stuff regarding criminology. in his early teens, obviously not allowed to set out on a Pokémon journey like he wanted, ryan began showing signs of ocd for the first time, usually appearing as the excessive cleaning of anything he could get his hands on. this caused more concern from his parents, and while with medication he managed to control his 'illness', his parents became ever more alert of their son's well-being.
without his parents' knowledge - and consent, obviously - ryan had began studying criminology around the age of fifteen. he used to spend most of the time he had to himself outside, around the police- and ranger headquarters. quite a few cops and rangers were kind enough to take the ambitious teenager under their wing and entertain him with stories on how they 'captured the bad guys'. one day, ryan's pleading for them to take him along on a mission got him exactly that. without his mother knowing, telling he was going on a field day with his class, ryan packed his bag with improvised csi gear he had conjured up for himself and went along with detective wright of the fall city police department and ranger fey, who was assigned to look out for the boy.
it was supposed to be a routine job. it turned into a shootout. but not with regular guns, though. with a nail gun. ranger fey must've looked the other way for, what, ten seconds? it appeared it was more than enough time to snatch ryan and push a nail gun to his chest. when detective wright made a jump for the perp, the nail gun went off, drilling a nail just above ryan's right eye. the guy was arrested, ryan was taken to the hospital and the nail was removed, but that didn't really ensure a happy ending. not only did ryan's eyesight temporarily worsen, his parents - or actually, his mother toni - had decided ryan was better off kept inside of the house at all time, under constant supervision.
tired of his mother's tyranny and determined after his incident to make the world a better place, ryan quit school at eighteen and ran away from home to join the police department of fiore. they rejected him because of his ocd and the incident with the nail gun, and he was told to try at the rangers; if he was passionate enough, he could join there like another famous ranger couple had done before him. deciding that staying in fiore was too much of a risk, as his parents might discover him and drag him back home, ryan took up all his savings and began hitchhiking, traveling around until he reached a region named johto. the young man spent a year doing odd jobs, and, with a little help from a local bank where he got himself a loan, ryan again enlisted to join the police academy of goldenrod. impressed by his passion for the job and the cause, he was accepted. ryan showed great potential; after being held back by his parents all those years, every little bit of energy the boy had kept inside him was suddenly released.
after his first year on the academy, ryan confessed to his parents about what he had done in the year he had disappeared. still concerned for her little boy, toni had a hard time accepting that ryan was an adult and could take care of himself. luckily for toni (well, luckily… we haven’t quite decided yet.) ryan found himself getting along with one of the other students at the academy. liz stokes was a nice girl, and toni was happy that her son had someone looking after him (even though most of the time, it actually is the other way around.) their friendship was quite the strong one, as it eventually resulted in the two renting a small apartment in the center of goldenrod, leaving people wondering if there was more going on between them than just friendship. the two of them progressed through their education nicely, but it was mainly because of liz wanting some more action that the two decided to, instead of taking up a regular job, pursue a childhood dream. drawn to the island by its history and rumors of new kinds of pokémon roaming the lands, liz and ryan set off towards lanorae in order to become pokémon trainers. Who knows, maybe lanorae’s police force turns out in need of a duo of criminalists…
