Stefen stepped off the boat onto a pier leading to the village. Finally he could start his own little adventure.
'Kinda reminds me of home in a way' Stefen thought as he walked through Konika village. His hands in his pockets and his eyes looking up into the sky, Stefen's mind began to wander as he made his way to Proffessor Aspen's Lab.
His mind began to think of the Pokemon he could choose from. He had been told the lab would have the standard choice of one of three 'starters', the starters having fire, water or grass as their type. Stefen had thought he heard something about sometimes having four alternatives, but, he'd just have to wait till he got there to be sure.
Eventually getting directions to the lab from a passerby, he approached the lab doors and steadied his breath. "Heh, finally here and I'm nervous" he mumbled to himself, knocking politely on the door and making sure to keep his mind from wandering.

Jacquelyn had a slight bounce to her step as she did her work, humming to herself and sometimes singing to the Pokemon she dealt with. This was a usual attitude for the ever-optimistic aide, however she seemed to have an extra "glow" to her. Why? No one had quite been able to figure out nor did they wish to ask her, lest she start to speak of an enchanting "encounter" with a member of the opposite sex the previous night or something of the likes. Instead, the other aides just decided to let it go and let her go about in this manner, always making sure to keep an eye on her in case she needed help. The more ornery workers found themselves avoiding young Jacquelyn, for they found her attitude annoying and wished she would quiet down for once.
The actual source of her joy was simple: She could finally work on her own without her "mentor" - or at least that's how she thought of Caroline - hovering over her shoulder and telling her she was doing everything wrong. Nowadays, Jacquelyn knew what she was doing a bit more, thus allowing the two to work apart rather than together all the time. That didn't mean the new aide was completely competent or the older aide had abandoned her, but they at least had short reprieves from each other, thus allowing a bit of sanity to remain between the two. What elated Jacquelyn the most was that Caroline had the day off today, so it didn't matter how good or bad the young adult did - Caroline couldn't yell at her anyway!
Therefore, it was no surprise when Jacquelyn was the first to get to the door when Stefen came knocking, nor was it a shock when she put on a large grin and greeted the man her own age warmly with, "Hey there! Welcome to Professor Aspen's lab! She's out now, she goes on lots of trips with her Pokemon, but I'll be glad to help you. My name's Jacquelyn Skidd. I'm one of her aides." Standing aside, the young woman opened the door wide for Stefen to enter. "Come on in. You're a trainer, am I right?" She tucked a few strands of curly, blue hair that had fallen out of her ponytail behind her ear and smiled. "I love seeing trainers off."

"Well, then you must love your job here eh?" Stefen said with a light chuckle. Stepping inside, Stefen took a quick look at the lab, seeing many pokeballs, computers and lab equipment.
Stefen laughed again before saying "Weird, looks like the perfect place for a researcher to me, though I heard of a guy in Hoenn, some guy called Birch who does the same thing". From what he could deduce, Stefen assumed the proffessor had many abscences, leaving the aides to run the lab.
"Well, you're right that I'm a trainer hopeful. Now, I heard you guys have alternative 'starter pokemon' right?" Stefen asked politely. Grabbing his sunglasses, Stefen fiddled with the rims almost nervously.
"Heh, I was never really a big fan of the regular traditional starters".

'Well, then you must love your job here, eh?'
Jacquelyn smiled more and nodded. "Yep! This is a dream come true. I could never get into the training thing myself, so I was excited when Professor Aspen offered me a position here." The smile faltered ever so slightly at the above mentioned - that had been the day that her father had evicted her from home, certain that her future was in Pokemon training. However, it was hardly noticeable and Jacquelyn quickly recovered by the time Stefen had looked back to her for conversation.
'Now, I heard that you guys have alternate 'starter Pokemon,' right? Heh, I was never really a big fan of the regular traditional starters.'
"You heard right!" she chirped, giggling slightly. "And no worries about not liking the usual set-up for trainers. If you think about it, the situation can be a little inconvenient. I mean, what if you wanted a specialized team or something? Anyway..." The aide led Stefen over to the table on which seven Pokeballs were found. She indicated to the last four as she rattled off the names of what was inside. "We've got Ekans, Natu, Growlithe, and Glameow for you to choose from. Or, you could take one of our Pokemon Eggs and get whatever Pokemon hatches out of it." With a shrug, she finished with, "Up to you. Let me know when you've made your choice or if you need anything."

"Well, I was secretly hoping for a Ground or maybe a rock type, but fire is pretty cool too" Stefen murmered, eyeing the pokeball holding the Growlithe. Stefen remembered hearing about a Growlithe's loyalty, and that immediatly caught his attention.
"Hey, Miss Jacquelyn I'll take the Growlithe, they always interested me" Stefen said to the aide.
Slightly embaressed, he put his hands in his pockets and quietly admitted, "Shame there's no Ground or Rock types, I'm hoping to get plenty of those someday".
Realising he needed to know where the first gym was, Stefen quickly asked, "Uhm, do you know which town the first gym is? I'd like to try my hand at it soon".

Jacquelyn stood quietly and patiently as Stefen made his choice, starting to feel rather proud of how professional she seemed. At this rate, she could show up Caroline in no time! The growing thought helped pass the time and keep the ever-active aide still until she was pulled from her alternate reality by the soon-to-be-trainer.
'Hey, Miss Jacquelyn. I'll take the Growlithe, they always interested me. Shame there's no Ground or Rock types, I'm hoping to get plenty of those someday.'
Blushing ever so slightly at the title, she smiled and nodded. "You got it. And Rock or Ground, huh? Don't worry, you'll find plenty. It's a big world out there, you know." Without further ado, the aide grabbed Growlithe's Pokeball and a brown bag that was stuffed away in a shelf nearby. "Here you go~!"
Congratulations! Stefen has received a Growlithe!

"There! That should be enough to get'cha started. Now, the first gym you should head for is in Purity Valley. There you can find Angela and her Flying-type Pokémon." The young woman beamed slightly, feeling helpful. This bit of information had been something she logged away during her journey to Konika Village, since at the time she was assuming she would personally need to know. "All you have to do is follow the path out of the village to get there. You'll run into wild Pokémon or other trainers, most likely - but with your new Growlithe, I bet you can take 'em." With a slight nod and a closed-lip smile, she finished with, "Good luck on your journey."
You may now continue into Route One - High Prairie!

Stefen took the pokeball containing his first Pokémon with a small, but genuine smile. "Thank you miss Jacquelyn, for the pokemon, information and supplies, didn't think I'd get all this" Stefen said, a look of gratitude on his features. Stefen pocketed the pokeball and other supplies before extending his hand with a smile, I hope to see you again someday.
After shaking her hand, Stefen walked down through the halls, giving a wave behind him as he did so. When he exited the lab, he took out the map and marked where he needed to go first, 'Purity valley, and a flying type gym, on the way there I gotta get a rock or ground type'.
While walking through the village to the road leading to Purity valley, he took out the pokeball holding his newly acquired Growlithe. Stefen stared at it for some time before thinking 'now what'll I call you eh?'. Stefen kept staring at it, but before long, his mind wandered again and he was off.
