Jayce hated the forest.

It was so confined and trapped and so... dense. He was too used to places like Mossdeep, where you could see across the ocean, no matter where you were standing on the island. But this was where he had to be at the moment. More or less, anyway. He had landed in Lanorae a long time ago, and hadn't really been attracted by the whole prospect of journeying through and beating all eight gyms before going to the whole elite thing. That was so generic and overdone. Besides, that wasn't really why he was here. He just wanted to get strong enough to go off on his own and look for... someone. Jayce had stopped by Konika village, and had overheard that there was a group of people who were looking to recruit members for a certain organization. It sounded better than the other choices, so Jayce was wandering here. Where he had heard that people were getting recruited.

But to be honest, Jayce rather had second thoughts. He had been wandering here for what seemed like hours and hours on end (although it probably hasn't been thirty minutes yet) and the dark woods was a little unnerving. He swore he could hear someone sneaking after him, and it wasn't a very nice feeling to be watched. His entire body tensed, he tried to act normal and cool, although it wasn't working.

"It's not nice to follow someone, y'know," he called out loudly, voice filled with cockiness. "Why don't you just come out already?"

But all that answered him was silence.

"Aren't you being a bit paranoid?" the response that came after a moment's silence held amusement in it. Of course, the voice's owner always seemed to find some degree of amusement in whatever recruits he chose to track down. Some were, admittedly, much more pathetic than he ever could imagine. Generally those were the ones that he just let go, watching with the same expression of amusement as they fled crying in whatever direction seemed most appealing to them.

Seeing they hadn't been inducted, they were of no threat. Had it been otherwise, he would have expended what resources he had available to hunt them down and... silence them, but he was sure there had already been multiple reports of a "dark man and an aggressive luxray" to the region's ranger association. One more wouldn't do any harm, especially to a man who had enough influence to cover his tracks efficiently.

The luxray in question was nowhere in sight, though given the uttermost silence of the trees it could be assumed that it was nearby. It was doubtful that even the pidgeys would be deathly silent otherwise, and in these isolated locations Kanaye really didn't have to worry about dealing with witnesses if things happened to get a bit messy on his Pokemon's part.

The feline had certainly shown a definite fondness for more aggressive negotiations.

"But, if you wish. I have been wanting to speak with you... Jayce."

He slid out from behind a nearby tree, brushing his long, dark hair away from his face with a pale hand. He seemed rather young for his position, probably being in his early thirties, though the way he held himself showed he had held a distinct position of superiority, which only seemed to be confirmed in his mind as he vocalized the fact he was fully aware of the name of the male before him. "You have shown some interesting prospects, ones I would like to take advantage of, if you're willing."

In the silence, Jayce had started to continue walking, but then that voice crept out of nowhere. The boy jumped, eyes wide at first, but whipped around, now-narrowed eyes trained just one tree over from where the man slid out of the shadows just seconds later. One corner of his lips turned up in almost a sneer, trying to look confident, but his hands being shoved into his pockets was a definite sign of his uncomfortableness. "It's not being paranoid if I'm really being followed, is it?" he asked, although not surprised about the man knowing his name. Jayce himself had a rather hazy past, a few years that had been devoted to gang-work. He had been in it long enough to know that people had their way of knowing such information, and usually, new recruits got a full background check before even being considered getting asked to join.

Jayce also knew from experience that he should keep himself in line. Bite back sharp remarks, don't even think about anything stupid. The way he figured it, this guy was something rather high up on the ranks of this group. He looked rather young, but that made him all the more formidable. For now, Jayce would bow down and kiss the ground he walked on, but in a while, he would grow stronger and better and it wouldn't be long until the roles got switched. Realizing that Jayce was staring with a light of menace in his eyes, he cast a quick glance around them.

"Just you?" he voiced, genuinely surprised. "I thought I'd be greeted with an entire group. I guess not." Jayce shrugged, fully aware that he had not answered the man's question, though he thought his answer was quite obvious. If he wasn't looking to join this Omega Syndicate group, then why would he be in these woods in the first place, scouting out any recruiters?

"Shouting for something to reveal itself tends to lend to the assumption of paranoia," Kanaye replied smoothly. He managed to keep a calm tone, though his eyes held a definite warning. The conversation had not reached a point where he would identify it as potentially dangerous for the other party, but nevertheless, the potential recruit's comments seemed to cause some degree of irritation.

Just him? Yes. It was needless to send an entire scouting party out for recruit induction. With how much information they gathered beforehand, it would be easy to gain the upper hand. Even so, he wasn't alone. He never really way, and a loud hiss from the right verified that.

"Oh, I'm not alone. Though I'm assuming Pokemon companions isn't what you meant. The creature the hiss belonged to still had chosen not to reveal itself, though the slight glance Kanaye sent in the direction of the sound seemed to hint that the Pokemon was nearby.

"But, this conversation is tiring. Just what can I expect you to bring to the Syndicate should I allow you membership?"

To be honest, Jayce jumped a little when he heard that hiss. Of course the man would have a large, intimidating Pokemon nearby. The hiss made him think of a grizzled Seviper, coiled around a large branch, staring at him with those ruby-red eyes. Or perhaps, a large, feline Pokemon, ready to pounce, flashing those long claws. But then Jayce thought of the man with a large Purugly, and the thought was humorous enough to put a smile on his face, though he regretted it almost immediately and bit down on the sides of his tongue to wipe the smile off his face. He could already tell that this man was more of a no-nonsense kind of guy, and for now, he'd have to really keep most of those comments to himself.

At the man's question, Jayce shrugged and said, "If you know so much about my background, shouldn't you already know what i'm good for?" But he rethought it immediately, and before the other man could even bother to interject, he continued and said, "I've been pick-pocketing since i was three and member of a gang since around that time. I just thought my abilities should be used for something... better."
